The paleo diet is also known as the “paleolithic diet” because it’s based on eating what our ancestors used to eat. Don’t be afraid! You are not supposed to go into the wild and try to hunt a mammoth down! You just have to eat whatever our forefathers from the stone-age ate. That means that no dairy product is permitted or any kind of cereal either. Yes, I know what you are thinking… the paleo diet it’s quite difficult to do and limited in the foods you can have. What is the paleo diet?
You can also call it “caveman diet” or “stone-age diet”. The paleo diet was first studied by the gastroenterologist Walter Voegtlin in the 1970’s. Later, Dr. Stanley Boyd Eaton developed and adapted the idea and the diet to our time in 1985. Nowadays, Loren Cordain has founded “The Paleo Movement” and has popularized the paleo diet. According to Cordain and his paleo diet premise, eating the same way our ancestors did before agriculture was invented, can help us minimizing the risk of chronic disease, optimize our health and lose weight. When you start doing the paleo diet your protein intake increases, the same for your fiber, potassium, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plant phytochemicals intakes. It also lowers the carbohydrate and sodium consumption.
In order to do the paleo diet the right way you have to remember that during the stone-age cavemen were able to hunt and to fish, but they didn’t know about agriculture or how to elaborate basic things such as bread, cheese, yogurt or butter. It’s really a diet based on the most basic foods you can find, the food at their primary level. Of course, you can (and must) cook them. We are not letting you eat raw fish or meat!
How does it work and what should I eat?
The paleo diet is actually quite healthy because it forces you to avoid eating any kind of industrial product and helps you to consume more natural foods such as fruits and vegetables. It is true that it’s quite a limitated diet and you will miss a lot of nutrients that are essential for your health. You will have to make up for all the nutrients you are not eating with other foods. This might be difficult but not impossible!
It might also difficult to find sweet things to eat and at the same time respect the paleo diet, you need to be creative! You are not allowed to consume any kind of cereal and that mean that you can’t eat flour or things made with flour, so any kind of cakes or pastries are forbidden. You can always choose fruits to get the sugary touch… or put some imagination and look for some original recipes with ingredients that can replace the ones you can’t eat, for example our banana bread recipe!
